fraud, but now I have creditors hounding me to pay back the ,000, and there is NO WAY i could afford that. Is there anything i can do?

Well, it depends. You could be accountable if you were scammed. For example, when people get letters in the mail saying they “won” five thousand dollars, etc. and they cash the check and it turns out the check bounces? You’re still accountable. Now, if somebody stole your identity, you’re not responsible for that.
