How do I deal with a boss that has unrealistic goals for me?

Question by Billy Shat: How do I deal with a boss that has unrealistic goals for me?
Earlier this year, my boss laid out 8 major goals for me. In and of themselves, all were attainable. However, each month there are one or two “fires” that come up that he puts me on to solve. In July, I started working an extra 3-4 hours a day to dedicate to my goals, but this time gets filled quickly by extra work that he serves up for me to do. Unfortunately, he grades his employees success by how many documented goals that get accomplished, and does not consider the extra assignments in the overall review.

Work goals are (or at least should be) negotiable, and should be re-evaluated as the year progresses. I suggest talking to your boss. Tell him that with the extra things that have come up you are concerned that you will no longer have time to meet your goals. Keep it positive; avoid a complaining attitude. Come to the meeting with a plan to get the most important things done, and perhaps suggest dropping one of the goals.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the fires that pop up (and this happens to most everyone) are often not as important as they seem at the time. Find some time management system that works for you; I suggest reading about several, because different systems work for people with different styles. Beware of things that are urgent but not important. Learn to say no to those things.

Is your life a safe and sound route? Do you want your small business ideas take you beyond that route? Are you satisfied with your current life? Or do you wonder if this is all there is to it?

If you have these thoughts, you’re a step ahead of the big mass, who struggle everyday with a 9-5 job, to make someone else rich, coming home to dinner and then it’s TV time until they fall asleep. Only to get up the next morning and repeat the same well known, safe and sound route.

It’s nearly impossible to grow as a person, dreams of success can not be realized, when life is lived in a safe and sound comfortable route.It’s so easy just to do the same thing everyday. It’s risk free and convenient to do the same thing everyday.

However if you only dream about your small business ideas, you’re always going to have what you have right now.

What do you really want? Do you want your life to change? Do you want to activate the life of your dreams? Do you want the freedom that comes with having your own small business? Do you want to tell your boss what he can do with the job? Than you have to walk beyond your safe and sound comfortable route! First you have to find out what you want. What matters most to you? In your dreams of a better life, exactly what do you dream about?

Be very specific when you answer those questions.

Start your new life journal. Write down your answers in a note book. What kind of small business ideas do you have? Do you want to provide services or products? Why do you want to realize your small business ideas? How much money are you aiming for? Are you going to do anything good with your financial success? Are you going to give back to your community?

What is your small business mission statement? Make a list of business and personal goals. Post your goals where you can see them everyday.

Learn to always stay positive

Train yourself to focus only on the positive. See yourself living the life you want. See the car you desire. See the house you want to have. See the good you are going to do with your small business success. See yourself living your new life. Feel how it feels to live your new small business life.

Your mind is a very powerful force. Your thoughts have the power to change. You will gain what you think. If you think “I will try to achieve my goals”, you really think “I might fail”. Think that you’re going to succeed with your small business ideas.

You can’t afford the possibility of failure in your thoughts or in what you speak. Pay close attention to your thoughts and words. Take away all negativity. Stay Focused and believe in your success. Every night before go to sleep, write in your new life journal. List what you accomplished to move you forward toward your goal.

Specify your todo list for next day, that will drive you toward your goals. Take action everyday to achieve your goals. Be persistent.
