Art as a Weapon: a Documentary About the Intersection Between Art & Politics with Aung San Suu Kyi and Shepard Fairey Begins Fundraising

The film will interweave three different experiences of people with creativity for social change in a single story, how to confront art oppression through nonviolent resistance. The film makes the audience a glimpse into the lives of the Burmese school children how to use spray paint, Buddhist monks, to write poems, and street artist Shepard Fairey created a three-story mural in support of Burma.
Director / Producer Jeff Durkin was inspired to make the film, when the artist Shepard Fairey a 30 high Burmese monk painted in his neighborhood in San Diego. This image represents the intersection of three very unique and seemingly incompatible elements: street art, Buddhism and human rights, and the idea of ??using “art as a weapon” was born. Shortly thereafter, he was able to absorb, Nobel Peace Prize and former political prisoner of Burma’s Aung San Suu Kyi’s first call to the U.S. after her house arrest, a group of UC Berkeley students. “This is where art and politics collided for me,” Durkin says.
