Start a Sewing Business Stitch by Stitch
If you love to sew, well, then you have a very good reason to start a sewing business. Why not take that love and make it your main bread earner?
In a sewing service business you’ll get use of your creativity.
You can choose to start your sewing service business in the home or outside the home.
The start-up costs can be kept to a minimum, especially if you already have a sewing machine and a serger.
You will have numerous sewing areas to choose from:
- Custom Sewing Biz/custom clothier or custom dressmaker. As a custom clothier you’ll sew garments for individual clients
- Custom Designer. If you choose to work as a custom designer you’ll use your own designs for individual customers.
Both of the above can specialize in:
children’s clothing, men’s wear, dance wear, costumes, choir robes, women’s wear, high couture clothing, intimate apparel, plus-sized clothing, sewing for handicapped individuals, and on it goes…
More sewing areas…
- Sewing for Weddings
- Sewing service for the home, such as custom window treatments, slipcovers, pillows, shower curtains…
- Sewing Crafts, from dolls to toys
- Alterations, from replacing a zipper to alterate a wedding gown
- Sewing for pets
How to get started
First you need to determine which type of sewing you would enjoy most. Then define your target group – what are their needs and how can you reach them? Where and how will you sell your services?
Advertising your sewing business will be best done by word of mouth, it is usually very effective. Do a nice job for one client and the word will spread.
You can also place a listing in your local phone directory, leave your business card and/or flyer’s in fabric shops, beauty salons.
And/or build your own web site where you will list your sewing services, the benefits of your services and of course beautiful pictures of your work.
