Use your police reports are proof. When you wrote that "there is no way that you could pay this", it made me think that there is a bit more to this story as I have no idea why you would even CONSIDER paying this if you knew nothing about it. So please Be warned....if they find out that you are lying...you could face some very serious charges. These charges will make your 5k look like movie admission after you factor in your court costs, cost of incarceration and attorney's fees. So if you know that this was being done and you did not report it or if you know who did this you and you are unwilling to cooperate fully (if it was a relative etc) or if you participated (even unwittingly in the scam) you might want to just pay it rather than risk worse charges. (federal offenses?!) With that said, if you dont know who did it and you were not a party to it, when you contact the credit card companies, this should be removed from your file since most cards now have ZERO fraud liability! Call the creditors and dispute the debt. Use your police reports are proof.
